“It’s a cat café,” Ayesha explained. “They’re huge in Japan. They’re perfect for people who love cats but can’t have one of their own. Like me!” Ayesha grinned.

“It’s brilliant!” Isla breathed. She was definitely going to add Japan to her Places to Visit list in her notebook.

There was a sudden movement behind the sofa and Isla held a finger to her lips, leaning to peer over the top. “Milo!” she cried. “What are you doing back there?”

“I … um … lost something,” he said sheepishly, bobbing up to wave at Grace and Ayesha.

“You were eavesdropping more like!” Isla said, ushering him out of the conservatory. “You should be in bed!”

Milo ran off giggling and Isla snuggled back into her sleeping bag. Roo jumped out of his bed and climbed over Isla’s legs, nuzzling at her hand. She scooped him up with a sigh, snuggling her face into his fur as he settled down to sleep beside her.

“Do you think Sam was ignoring me because he was embarrassed?” Isla said quietly.

Grace yawned and stroked Poppy, who had curled up on the end of her sleeping bag. “I’m sure it was just because he was with his friends.”

“He was probably too engrossed in playing football,” Ayesha added.

If only people were as easy to understand as cats, Isla thought.
